Q&A When did you first start taking photographs? I don’t really know how to answer this question. I suppose it was a natural progression creatively. I used to draw and paint in high school- mostly futuristic, phantasmagoric scenes. After high school I studied Graphic Design in college where I learnt digital software and computer graphics. Photography came a little later- I bought my first digital camera last year and I started taking pictures as an amateur. Learning what worked and what didn’t happened naturally. Going back to the earlier question- when did I start taking photographs- well, I’ve always been instinctively drawn to photography. I love the photographic medium for its verisimilitude. Also, a photograph can often seem more truthful than a work of digital art. Many digital works- unless the artist is exceptionally skilled- often seem artificial and contrived. I know firsthand because I did a series of digital style portraits last year, and I was not happy with the results. I wanted to avoid the same pitfalls so photography seemed to be the next logical step. How would you define the content and philosophy that governs your work? What is your subject matter precisely? That is an interesting question. Firstly, I am essentially a narcissistic artist. My prose work, my poetry, my visual work- is basically an extension and an examination of myself. A lot of what I do creatively is mostly autobiographical in content. Even though my most recent photographic work has been of buildings, dogs and weird light formations- I am basically mapping out myself and my interior world. Early on I realized that even though I was capturing the exterior, physical world- I was actually exploring the interior of my soul. I was investigating my feelings, my aesthetic values as well as my deepest fears. One of the things I am discovering through photography is the eternal conundrum of what makes sense visually- what was beautiful? What was not? And beauty is truth.
